Deadline May 11, 2025

Thanks to the generosity of Pride Ortho's founding President Dr. Qusai Hammouri and founding member Dr. Julie Samora, we will also be offering scholarships to medical students completing orthopedic away-rotations at other institutions. Just tell us where you are going and why in the application below! All away rotations must be set up and approved through the program where you will be rotating. Mentorship and a letter of recommendation will be provided to all scholarship recipients if interested.

Dr Gary Friedlaedner is chair emeritus of Orthopaedics at Yale. For the past 25 years Gary and Linda have held a safe space in their home for diversity in orthopedics through their monthly book club. This scholarship is named in appreciation to their DEI work.

AAOS 2026 Pride Ortho Scholar Award

Deadline December 7th, 2025

We will be awarding scholarships this year for LGBTQIA+ and ally medical students to attend the AAOS & Pride Ortho annual meetings -- located in New Orleans, LA, March 2nd-6th, 2026.

The purpose of the scholarship is to expose LGBTQIA+ and ally students to orthopaedic surgery through attendance at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and our Pride Ortho annual meetings. The scholarship will substantially reduce the cost burden of attending the meeting, with an anticipated scholarship amount of at minimum $1,000 per student. Theses scholarships are funded in part by an IDEA Grant from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Activities will include mentoring with surgeon members of Pride Ortho, group outings with the Pride Ortho scholars, and attending the Pride Ortho annual meeting. The students will also be enrolled in the AAOS medical student programming on 3/3/26, and they will be encouraged to participate in other AAOS and affiliate organization events, such as the RJOS and JRGOS events.

Please note, after the AAOS meeting, we will ask for written feedback regarding how the AAOS events and this scholarship programming impacted you.

Applicants must be Pride Ortho members by the time they submit their application. Become a member here.

The application is due on December 7th, 2025 at 11:59pm EST. Awardees will be notified by the beginning of January 2026.
